The 34th Annual Tryzub Golf Tournament: a Testament to Sportsmanship and Camaraderie
by Eugene A. Luciw, J.D.
On June 12, a gorgeous Saturday greeted the 80 golfers that had gathered, at Limekiln Golf Club from no less than six States, to participate in the Ukrainian American Sport Center Tryzub’s annual golf outing. The strength of the friendship and camaraderie that the Ukrainian golfers and their honored guests had cultivated over the course of a thirty-four year tradition was evident in their enthusiastic chatter and gleaming smiles.
As usual, the course played well. It presented a challenge to all aspects of the players’ games, without overwhelming any second flight players. Limekiln’s expert staff marshaled the play quite well.
“Our goal is to create and to preserve friendship and social and professional networking in our [Ukrainian] community …, said tournament director Joe Homick. “Many of us have become lifelong friends through tournaments such as this: we play in leagues as teams, we travel to more distant golf venues together and genuinely enjoy each others’ company,” added Homick.
The presence of dozens of younger golfers, many of whom were not even born when the tournament was founded, suggests that the Ukrainian golfing tradition will continue well into the future. New kinships are being forged.
After golf, everyone gathered at nearby “Tryzubiwka” in Horsham, Pa. for an awards banquet. Joe Homick welcomed everyone, thanked them for participating, reminded them about any number of exciting sporting, cultural and social events at Tryzub, and proceeded, along with Bohdan Anniuk, to announce the winners in a boisterous awards ceremony.
Homick thanked his committee members -- Roman Jarymovych, Andrij Zajac, Orest Lesiuk, Bohdan Anniuk, Gene Luciw and Alex Woloszczuk -- for their hard work and dedication.
The sponsor for this year’s event was perennial supporter, Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home.
Each player received a generous and thoughtful door prize and a popular 50/50 raffle replenished the pool for next year’s tournament with $440. Naturally, $440 went to the winner of the draw.
Next years golf tournament will take place in June at a date to be announced. Check Tryzub’s website for additional details and for upcoming events: www.tryzub.org.
